Jazz on the Tyne features the best in jazz from North East England and beyond. The show started in 2019 and was initially broadcast online on Hive Radio by Community Arts Project North East, before moving exclusively to Mixcloud.

I talk with acclaimed vocalist Alexia Gardner, ahead of her quintet’s appearance at the augural Hexham Jazz Weekender. Along with music by Alexia, you’ll hear tracks by the Chris Coull Quartet with Imogen Ryall, Abbie Finn, Paul Edis, SwanNek, Threeway feat. Ben Crosland, Modern Vikings, and Joe Steels, all of whom will be playing in Hexham. I also preview Courtney Pine’s gig at the Glasshouse in Gateshead.

Meet Your Host
Colin Muirhead is the presenter of Jazz on the Tyne. Colin got into jazz whilst working in the US in the early 1990s and has been passionate about it ever since. So much so that he went to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland 13 times – and wrote a book about this!
Colin aims to play jazz of all types, performed by musicians from North East England and beyond. Duke Ellington said that there are simply two types of music: “good music and the other kind” – well, on Jazz on the Tyne, you’ll hear only great music! The show also includes interviews with musicians and previews of upcoming events.
